I don’t know about you, but I love looking at fine architecture. The older the structure is, the more it amazes me. In the second part of my “northern experience”, I’m going to share with you what I saw in Intramuros.
Here’s the first part: A Trip To The North To Meet Jon
Just a little background of Intramuros- it is also called the “walled city”. Settled on June 12, 1571, this used to be the seat of power during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines (1521–1898).

That’s it! The place offers a lot more than what is shown above, but we could no longer bear the heat so we stopped looking around.
How about you? Do you love old structures? Let me know about your favorite ones by commenting below! 🙂
Yep, the famed Intramuros. Historic place that is so nice that it is one of the easiest tourist destination to go to in Manila. I can only wish they would completely remove the companies making business there and make it a theme park of some kind where cars are not allowed, except for some streets, where people could walk and… I digress.
Memorable for me too because that is where San Agustin Church is and my lola is there sa back where they have this place for jars na mga na cremate.

I lived in Manila for five years, and been to the walled city twice. I think Intramuros is underrated, thanks to the crime rates. I myself had experienced getting robbed, which was very traumatic, if I may say, during the second visit. I tried to blend in and be very cautious, but still…
Anyway, if the government could improve the security in the area even more,I believe that the walled city will have more tourists and local visitors. Hahaha.. I just remembered the sleeping guardia civil during my visit, yes, sleeping on a bench in the middle of the day! It’s okay with me, we know the concept of siesta, but it would had been better if he was awake and engaging with visitors. 🙂

The last time I visited Intramuros was during my elementary field trip. It’s been a while. I’d definitely should pay a visit. 🙂

Love the structures within the walls of Intramuros. Love walking on its paved walkways and even spending a few hours just sitting on its bricked walls. There are a few small time eateries within the wall, too and they serve the yummiest inihaws and papaitan. I just hope security will be improved as there are some illegal settlers within the place as well.

I love traveling back in time in places like Intramuros! This post reminds me I have a dozen of photos I have yet to post when I did a tour a few years back.
Have you been to Vigan or Taal? 🙂

It is still one of the places in Manila I truly valued. It’s undeniably classic and I guess a better representation of the city if properly maintained. Hope to make a visit again soon.

Just like you, I have always fancied fine architecture. Reason why I went to Corregidor and enjoyed the architecture of Vietnam! I never had the chance to roam around Intramuros. I’ve actually asked around for a whole day tour price but I’m still kind of tight in budget, but touring in Intramuros is still on my to do lists! Hopefully soon!

How I wish they could remove all the squatters out of Intramuros. This is a special district that should exclusively dedicated to historical conservation and value. – Fred

I completely agree. For me too, the older the architecture the more amazed I get. More often than not, older architecture end up being religious amd many think that I’m religious. I’m just more history & heritage oriented…

I love old structures. When I visit new places I really love to visit ruins or old places. Learning about the history they have, trying to imagine in my mind how it was back then. I think it’s so interesting and full of content. Full of things to learn. It makes me travel even further, like back in time on top of the travelling into space Haha

Same here. There is something with old structures that is appealing. I’ve found a similar “walled city” in Puerto Rico. Great photos by the way. 🙂

Hi Jill, lovely photos! I have been meaning to visit the Walled City but never got anywhere near to completing it. I share the same love for old architecture and the stories that are included in each nordic columns and artistic lattice. It’s amazing how they could manage to keep the integrity of the place and make it open for the public. Is there a tour guide when you visit?z

Hi Emma! Thanks for dropping by! There are actually tour guides who’d offer Kalesa rides all over the Intramuros.

Same pinch!!! I love old art and architecture. Esp coming from India with surviving art that’s as old as 2nd C BCE, a few centuries old stuff doesn’t even impress me much! Lolz.
The Cathedral looks gorgeous. It has a very old European feel to it.

I’ve been wanting to take the kids on a tour here. It’s so rich in history and culture it seems a shame not to experience it. What bothers me is that it slowly fading away. I hope that more care is placed into maintaining such a historical place.
